Holiday Pre-Order Round-Up

November 8, 2020

This week I don’t have a particular news story that I wanted to discuss. So, in short I just want to share a few things of which I thought our Engineers might want to be aware. In case you were waiting, you can now pre-order the new iPhone 12 Pro Max. It has a better camera system than the iPhone 12 Pro and much larger screen. But, for those who like smaller screens, Apple also launched their iPhone 12 Mini which has a 5.4″ screen. It still has a lot of the great features of the new iPhone, but it’s a lot smaller.

The PlayStation 5 will be available for pre-order on November 12th and the XBOX Series X will be available for pre-order on November 10th. Both systems will bring 4K resolutions, new games, ray-tracing, and so many other cool features that only next-gen consoles can bring. If you’ll remember, we discussed ray-tracing in a previous episode. If you missed it, please go back and listen. It is the next evolution in gaming and will change the way games look for the next decade.

The PC was also not neglected in the world of graphics. This year we received all new AMD and NVIDIA GPUs. This is the generation on which AMD brings us hardware-based ray tracing, piggy-backing off of their research from bringing it to the next-gen consoles. NVIDIA has had ray tracing and has made it even better this generation. These cards aren’t cheap, nor run at a low temperature, but if you want to game in 8K with ray tracing these are your cards. You won’t regret it with the next generation of games coming out soon.

On the free side of the house, Windows 10 just rolled out a new October Update with a lot of bug fixes and some new features, such as a refreshed Start Menu UI and Chromium-based Edge browser. Several Linux distributions also upgraded recently, so that means that any distribution that runs on them will also get a large update soon. If you are looking to get in on the opensource action this holiday, check out Ubuntu, Linux Mint, or Elementary OS. Zorin OS, based on Ubuntu, also looks beautiful, if aesthetics are your thing.
